Pop-Up Magazine Returns to Los Angeles as Part of All-New National Tour
Heralded as “A sensation” by the New York Times, “Something special,” by PBS Newshour, and “A hit” by Forbes.
“Do not miss,” says the Los Angeles Times.
The critically-acclaimed live magazine’s Spring Issue travels to San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York
Following a string of sold-out shows across the country earlier this year, Pop-Up Magazine, the critically-acclaimed evening of live journalism, returns to Los Angeles with an all-new show, at The Theatre at Ace Hotel June 13, at 8:00 PM. With performances by award-winning writers, documentary filmmakers, radio producers and artists, Pop-Up Magazine features true, multimedia stories created especially for the stage and a live audience. “Imagine your favorite magazine came to life,” lauds The Boston Globe.
Contributors for the Pop-Up Magazine Spring Issue performance in Los Angeles include: Yassir Lester (actor, Girls, Making History), Carlos Javier Ortiz (visual artist), Gillian Laub (photographer), Fazeelat Aslam (director, producer), Lu Olkowski (radio producer), Sandra Allen (writer), Rachel Monroe (Texas Monthly), Brittany Spanos (Rolling Stone), and more.
Each contributor performs a vivid, multimedia story accompanied by illustrations, animations, photography, sound, film, and an original score, performed onstage by musical collaborators Magik*Magik Orchestra. Stories address a wide range of topics from politics, food, art, sports, design, business, science, and more. The night ends gathered around the bar, with the performers and audience mingling together. Performances are one night only and nothing goes online after – you have to be there to experience it. “If you blink, you’ll miss it,” says WBUR Boston.
The Pop-Up Magazine Spring Issue also travels to San Francisco for two nights at the newly-renovated Curran (5/31 & 6/1); Chicago at The Harris Theater (6/3); Washington, D.C. at The Lincoln Theatre; and New York for two nights at The Town Hall (6/8 & 6/9).
Pop-Up Magazine‘s live audience has grown rapidly – by tens of thousands of fans since its national expansion two years ago. Pop-Up Magazine has packed theaters across the country including San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, Brooklyn Academy of Music’s stunning Howard Gilman Opera House, New York City’s Town Hall, the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C.’s Lincoln Theatre, and the iconic Greek Theatre in Berkeley.
Pop-Up Magazine’s creators also produce The California Sunday Magazine. Launched in late 2014, The California Sunday Magazine features deeply reported stories and beautiful photography from across California, the West, Asia, and Latin America. The magazine has been a finalist for seven National Magazine Awards, including Magazine of the Year in 2017, and a winner three times, twice for photography.
